Country profiles

Immigrants, refugees, temporary residents and other newcomers in our communities come from many different countries around the world. Many have experienced ongoing humanitarian crises, including war, impoverishment, and climate change-induced disasters; many carry hidden trauma from torture, systemic violence, racism, and intimidation by organized crime.

VCST produces country profiles as part of our Interconnectedness Initiative to support frontline workers in the settlement, counselling, policing, healthcare and other sectors. These profiles provide a general context and background about countries where many of our friends and neighbours hail from. We aim to give an overview of the structural, systemic, political and economic factors that push many people to leave their homes for Canada.

An intersectional awareness can help Canadian agencies and frontline workers implement culturally informed and trauma-aware services. Understanding some of the background of the country of origin is essential to deliver ethical, accurate, and effective service and care for immigrants and refugees.
